IAF Air Man : Application Procedure



The advertisement inviting applications for vacancies for the Airman cadre will appear in the leading newspapers including 30 regional newspapers across India. The advertisements are also published in the Employment News or the Rozgar Samachar. The application should be send in the required format mentioned in the advertisement, before the last date. The selection procedure for picking the candidates is quite strict and elaborate. The five steps  involved are
      Processing of Application   Testing the Abilities   Conducting Medical Examination   Preparing Merit List   Undertaking Enrolment
Processing of Application :
After checking all eligibility wise application forms, one will receive an Admit Card that will contain all the relevant details like the date, time and venue of your examination. The subjects tested on will depend on the trade you have applied for. The following are the subjects for examination.

     Technical Streams You will be tested in four papers- English, Mathematics, Science and Intelligence and General Awareness.   Non-Technical/MTD Streams You will be tested for English and Intelligence and General Awareness. (The examination is based on the CBSE (X / XII) curriculum / syllabus.)   Education Instructors The pattern of the paper is in keeping with the basic minimum educational qualification  required. Here, you will also be interviewed after the examination. 
Testing the Abilities
The selection tests will be held at any of the Airmen Selection Centres across India. (click here for Contacts of Selection Centres) One should take the admit card and all the original certificates to the venue, at the time of the examination. These will be verified before you proceed for the examination.


Conducting Medical ExaminationAfter you have successfully cleared the Exams, you will be sent for a medical examination, which shall be conducted by a Medical Officer of the Armed Forces.
After the medical examination, you are either declared 'Fit' or 'Unfit' or 'Temporarily Medically Unfit' (TMU). 


Preparing Merit List If you have successfully cleared the examination and are declared medically fit / TMU, your name will feature in the All India Merit List. This list will be displayed at the Airmen Selection Centres, where the tests were conducted. A call letter will be sent to you, requesting you to report to the Airmen Selection Centre for enrollment.
Undertaking EnrolmentApart from the enrolment formalities, the candidate should take a Trade Aptitude Test, to determine the right trade for him. Depending upon the score as well as the position in the Merit List, candidates will be assigned to one of the streams in the Technical or Non-Technical Trades.


After the candidate have completed your enrolment formalities, he will be sent to the Administrative Training Institute for 26 weeks for Basic Combatant Training. Thereafter, the candidate would be send to one of the Training Institutes for specialisation in the trade that he is assigned.

Career in INDIAN AIR FORCE Flying Branch


The Indian Air Force calls for enthusiastic and committed engineers to become a part of the Indian Air Force team. Candidates short-listed after the initial selection procedure, go through a rigorous training regimen at one of the Air Force training establishments. Thereafter, they are commissioned as officers and embark on a glorious and fulfilling career.

You surely are propelled to newer heights in the flying branch of the Indian Air Force. You are trained either as a Fighter pilot, or a Helicopter pilot, or a Transport pilot and are a part of various peace and wartime missions.
As an engineer, you enter the Flying branch through the Air Force Academy.
Air Force Academy
The Air Force Academy is one of the most prestigious training establishments of the Indian Air Force. Here you are trained and prepared for your responsibilities as a pilot.
The following are the three modes of entry for engineers to join the Flying branch:
Combined Defence Services Examination (CDSE)

  • You can take the Combined Defence Services Examination (written test conducted by UPSC) to join the Flying branch of the Indian Air Force. Men can join the Air Force through this mode of entry and will be given a Permanent Commission.
  • For applying through any of the entry points mentioned above, you must fulfil the following eligibility criteria:
  • Age 
    19 to 23 years*
  • Marital Status
    Single
  • Nationality
    Indian
  • Gender
    for men only.
  • Educational Qualifications
    1. Graduate ( Three Year Course ) in any discipline from a recognised university (with Physics and Mathematics at 10+2 level) / BE / B Tech( Four Year Course) .
    2. Final Year students can also apply, provided thay donot have any backlog.
    3. No Percentage Bar for CDSE entry.

      Advertisement Schedule:

      April and September Every Year 
National Cadet Corps Special Entry ( Through CO NCC Unit / DG NCC )
As a Air Wing Senior division 'C' Certificate holder of the National Cadet Corps, you can apply to the Flying branch of the Indian Air Force. Men can join the Air Force through this mode of entry and will be given a Permanent Commission.
  • For applying through any of the entry points mentioned above, you must fulfil the following eligibility criteria:
  • Age 
    19 to 23 years*
  • Marital Status
    Single
  • Nationality
    Indian
  • Gender
    for men only.
  • Educational Qualifications
    1. Graduate ( Three Year Course ) in any discipline from a recognised university who have attained minimum 60% marks in aggregate in all papers put together and have Physics and Mathematics at 10+2 level OR BE / B Tech( Four Year Course) from a recognised university with minimum 60% marks in aggregate in all papers put together.
    2. Final Year students can also apply, provided thay donot have any backlog and min 60 % aggregate marks in the previous year/ semister.
    3. NCC Air Wing Senior Division 'C' certificate.

Flying (Pilot) Short Service Commission (For Men & women)
with Term of Engagement of 14 Years with no further extension
Both men and women are eligible to apply for short service commission in the flying branch. ” Short Service Commission in Flying branch is for 14 years with no further extension.
  • For applying through any of the entry points mentioned above, you must fulfil the following eligibility criteria:
    • Age 
      19 to 23 years* 19 to 25 Years* for CPL Holders (Issued by DGCA (india) ).
    • Marital Status
      Single
    • Nationality
      Indian
    • Gender
      This is applicable to both men and women.
    • Educational Qualifications
      1. Graduate ( Three Year Course ) in any discipline from a recognised university who have attained minimum 60% marks in aggregate in all papers put together and have Physics and Mathematics at 10+2 level OR BE / B Tech( Four Year Course) from a recognised university with minimum 60% marks in aggregate in all papers put together.
      2. Final Year students can also apply, provided thay donot have any backlog and min 60 % aggregate marks in the previous year/ semister.
      3. Upper age limit for Candidates holding valid and current Commercial Pilot Licence issued by DGCA (india ) is relaxed upto 25 yeras*.

Entries were selected for airman job in air force .Course begins in 2011 February .Only Bachelors apply.Eligibility :-PLUS 2 pass with mathematics and physics as subject with 50% and above marks or electrical ,electronics,automobile,IT,computer science,Instrumentation DIPLOMA(50% or more)age between 1990 april born to 1994may 31.Height should me not less than 152.5 chest width should be 5cm expandable.Eye sight 6/36 with specs 6/9.Written exam should be in February 2011. As an Airman, apart from your basic pay, you are also entitled to a number of perks and benefits. Even during the training period you get a monthly stipend of Rs. 2850 if you join Combatant Group X or Y and Rs. 2650 if you join Combatant Group Z. The basic pay of the lowest ranking 'Aircraftsmen' (AC) to the highest ranking 'Master Warrant Officer' (MWO) in the three combatant groups, range from Rs. 4500-10,700/ month. Along with the pay there are benefits such as free accommodation, free ration, medical facilities, children's schooling, Insurance cover, after retirement benefits etc.

Physical Standards
Physical fitness is one of the most important prerequisites for joining the Air Force. Irrespective of the trade you are applying for, you must fulfill the basic physical standards.


Basic requirements for all candidates
Height
To join the Air Force as an airman, you should be at least 152.5 cm. tall. There are however, some trades that have different requirements.
Mechanical Transport Driver and Certain Technical Trades
Minimum height - 165 cm.
Minimum leg length - 99 cm.
IAF Police
Minimum height - 175 cm.
Ground Training Instructor and Musician
Minimum height - 167 cm
Clear Medical Record
You should have a clear medical record, with history clear of any of the following:
Mental Sickness/Fits
Diseases/Skin Ailments
Surgical Deformity
Chest
Minimum Expanded Chest (75cm)
Minimum Range Of Expansion (5cm)
Vision
Some minimum visual standards that you must fulfil in order to qualify.
You should have a minimum corrected vision of at least 6 / 12 in each eye. You could also have 6 / 6 in the healthier eye and 6 / 18 in weaker eye with spectacles with power not more than + / -5.50 Dioptres, inclusive of astigmatism in any meridian with full field of vision and Minimum CP-IV unsafe colour vision.
There are, however, other detailed visual and colour standards that are specific to different trades.
Hearing
You should have normal hearing i.e. you should be able to hear forced whisper from a distance of 6 meters in each ear individually.
Dental
You should have healthy gums and a good set of teeth.
It is advisable that candidates reporting for medical exam must ensure a high level of personal hygiene and bring the latest prescription and spectacles for corrected vision to avoid delay.
